Canoe heroes in Corio Bay double rescue

MEMBERS of an outrigger canoe crew completed a dramatic double rescue after chancing upon a fisherman floating lifeless in Corio Bay yesterday (Dec 14).

The exhausted fisherman and a friend had spent an hour adrift in the water after their 4.1m boat was swamped.

"If they didn't have life jackets on they wouldn't be with us," Water Police Acting Sergeant Stephen Carter said.

"They're lucky boys."

One of the men stayed with the upturned craft and the other attempted to reach a shipping channel marker between Limeburners Point and Point Henry before being overcome by exhaustion and cold.

Six members of Geelong Outriggers Canoe Club found him floating on his back and showing no sign of life.
