Geelong Outrigger Canoe Regatta

The Geelong Outrigger Canoe Regatta will again be held over the Australia Day (26-27th January 2008) weekend as part of Skandia Geelong Week. In 2007 the Outrigger regatta attracted over 130 individuals from 6 clubs.

For 2008 the Outrigger regatta will again provide a spectacle for the general public as well as a challenging competition for individuals.

An open invitation to Ocean/Surf Ski, Stand Up Paddlers, OC1 and OC2 outrigger canoes for endurance and sprints will be held during the opening day with prize money in men’s and women’s marathon events.

The afternoon program includes the impressive 15 meter 6-man outrigger canoes in sprint races and the exciting 1000m sprint with three turns.

Sunday morning is the traditional OC6 marathon over 16km on Corio Bay. The gruelling course for men and women will settle the best performing club for the regatta and the Glen Noonan memorial cup.

Finally the public have the opportunity to get up close to the canoes whilst a massed paddle past and novelty events are underway in the afternoon before presentation of medallions, prize money and trophies.
